Description
An extremely cool plant in every way, and highly ornamental and hardy, the Yucca rostrata, commonly known as Big Bend Yucca or Beaked Yucca, is a tree-like North American native species. Though it naturally inhabits western Texas and northern Mexico, where it can be found thriving on rocky slopes and ridges, it does well in other regions of the country in USDA Zones 5 to 11, which means it’ll handle temperatures down to -20F, or the most heat you can throw at it to Zone 11. When young, it looks more like a rounded shrub, but as it grows it forms an upright tree with a beautiful pom-pom-like, perfectly symmetrical globe of hundreds of soft, narrow, 2 foot long light gray-blue leaves. As it grows taller the old leaves fall off, or can be removed, which exposes the fibrous soft gray covering on the trunk. Large clusters of white, bell-shaped flowers on golden orange stalks tower above the foliage in late spring to early summer, depending on location. Performing best in well-drained to even rocky and sandy soils, Big Bend Yucca makes for a fine vertical accent tree or grouping in sunny to partially shaded rock gardens, landscape borders, and home foundation plantings. We suggest a minimum of 3 hours direct sunlight and good soil drainage.
The common name Big Bend Yucca arises from this species being found in its natural habitat of the Big Bend are of the Rio Grand River.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing up to 12 to 15 feet tall over time, and the canopy to 2 to 4 feet wide, the Big Bend Yucca is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Looks very nice around garden ponds or in rock gardens near boulders and also makes a nice solo or centerpiece in containers of 14 inches or more in diameter. A fine addition to rock gardens and the Xeriscape Gardens (low water needs when established). We like combining Yucca with other low water need plants such as junipers, barberry, abelia, ornamental grasses, and loropetalum to name a few.
Suggested Spacing:  5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences

Big Bend Yucca is exceptionally easy to grow in a very well-drained soil of average to low fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 3 hours of direct sunlight per day. It prefers a neutral to alkaline soil ranging between 6.5 to 8.0 on the pH scale. Add agricultural limestone (pelletized lime) to acid soils that measure below 6.5. No maintenance required except to remove spent leaves if you want. Otherwise, these leaves will fall off naturally to expose more trunk as the tree grows. Good drought tolerant when established though will appreciate an occasional watering during extended dry periods.
