Description
Got a narrow space you need to fill with a tall evergreen plant? If so, growing to only 3 feet wide and 12 to 15 feet tall, Degroot’s Spire Arborvitae might be just the plant you’re looking for. Degroot’s is a highly attractive and exceptionally durable and low-maintenance evergreen conifer perfect for narrow spaces where an accent, hedge or screen is desired…or just plant one to add an exclamation point to your landscape!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a narrow column 12 to 15 feet in height and 2 to 3 feet wide, Degroot’s Spire Arborvitae is ideal for use as a vertical accent in home foundation plantings or landscape borders. It’s the perfect choice for a narrow hedge or screen or to line driveways or property lines. It also grows well in pots and other containers where it serves as a unique centerpiece with foliage that contrasts nicely with flowers and other plants. A natural choice for conifer gardens, formal gardens, rock gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Spacing: 18 to 24 inches apart for solid hedge; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Arborvitae are very easy to grow in most any average soil in full sun to part shade. A wide range of soils are tolerated, including red clay, but Arborvitae prefers moist but well-drained neutral to alkaline loamy soil. They don’t like an overly dry site. Maintenance is minimal with very little if any pruning ever required.

Hello,
I have made purchases from Wilson Brothers Gardens for the last two years and really appreciate what you do. You have cultivars and species of plants that are ideal for my area and use (northern Indiana) and that I cannot find at my local box stores or garden facilities. As we look for the ideal plant or tree for the “current” spot we are working on, we like knowing we can turn to Wilson Bros if our local garden center doesn’t have just what we are looking for.
Also, all of our purchases from Wilson Bros have arrived as expected, healthy, and have thrived after planting. With so many online options, it’s hard to tell who knows how to ship plants well, and nice to have someone to trust when we need just the right element for our home gardens.
Regards.————————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG

I really like the quality and care that has gone into all of the plants that I have received from Wilson Bros. The orders are acknowledged and sent out quickly, with no waiting and and their packing is the best I have seen. The Arborvitaes are doing great and were more mature and fuller than expected for 1 gallon pots. I am very pleased and I will return.—————————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
For years, the primary nursery in my area has offered Degroot’s Spire arborvitae in one size–a five-gallon pot at a prohibitive price. I ordered the six-pack, one-gallon Degroot’s from Wilson’s as a first-time-order preview and I was delighted with the plants that arrived: healthy, compact, nicely sized for a gallon pot, and well-hydrated. (And that’s a BIG deal. Any grower will readily tell you, keeping a nearly pot-bound, one-gallon plant happy is no small task. That’s why nurseries love to sell in big pots, which naturally come with bigger prices and costlier shipping. That’s okay for landscape architects, but hard on plant-loving gardeners.) Packing for the six-pack arborvitae was consummate and delivery was timely, so I ordered another. Now, three weeks in the ground, with summer heat hitting, the 12 plants are well settled and as deep-green and perky as the day they arrived. Kudos to Wilson Bros! As far as I can see, there’s some bona fide hort excellence happening there.————————————-Wow! Thanks for the photos!! They are beautiful.
