Description

At only 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide, the Dragon Prince Cryptomeria is a perfect fit for smaller garden spaces and pots. Tolerant of heat and cold(-10F), and hot and dry conditions when established, with a tight, dense rounded habit that never requires pruning, it is the ultimate low-care plant. The vibrant green, finely-textured miniature foliage stays bright green year round making it an excellent choice for an accent in small gardens or in groupings or as a low hedge in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Its unique texture combines beautifully with plants that have larger leaves.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a rounded mound to 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide, the Dragon Prince Cryptomeria is ideal for use as a specimen in small garden spaces or in groupings or as a low hedge in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. One can be planted on each side of the front steps or the entrance to a walkway. Also makes a very nice solo or centerpiece in containers of 14 inches or more in diameter. A fine addition to conifer gardens, Asian theme gardens, and rock gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 3 feet apart for solid hedge; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Dragon Prince Cryptomeria is very easy to grow in most any average, moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Some shade or filtered sun in the afternoon is appreciated in USDA Zones 8b to 10b. Prefers not to dry out when young however is very drought tolerant when established. It does not like a constantly soggy or waterlogged soil so provide just enough water to maintain a damp to lightly moist soil until established. We’ve seen no serious disease or insect problems and the deer that visit our gardens won’t touch it. Can be lightly pruned in late winter for size control or shaping purposes though we never touch ours.
