Description
The largest growing and most impressive hardy Fountain Grass we’ve ever grown in our gardens, Pennisetum ‘Etouffee’ is another of the sterile hybrids developed by the University of Georgia breeding program, which means it won’t spread by seeds! From mid summer to mid fall, which is later flowering than other fountain grasses, loads of pretty, 8″foxtail plumes rise above 5′ tall by 6′ wide clumps of slender, gracefully arching bright green blades. The plumes emerge a creamy-tan color fading to lavender-bronze and are excellent for fresh or dried cut flower arrangements. The foliage turns to golden-yellow in fall. Superior cold and heat hardiness means gardeners in Zones 5a north to 9b south can enjoy this stunning beauty!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 5 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide, Etouffee Fountain Grass is ideal for use as an accent or in groupings or mass plantings in sunny landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Also very nice as a solo or centerpiece in larger container gardens surrounded by trailing flowering annual or perennial plants. A fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, rock gardens, around garden ponds, and cut flower gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 to 5 feet apart for mass plantings; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Fountain Grass is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average to low fertility and full sun. We suggest at least 7 hours of direct sunlight per day for best flowering and overall performance. Constantly soggy soil or standing water is problematic. Plants are quite drought tolerant once established. Maintenance is little to none. A damaged flower can be removed any time during the season. Foliage should be cut back near the ground annually before new leaves begin to emerge in late winter or early spring.
