Description
A brilliant beacon in the shade garden, the Florida Sunshine Anise is guaranteed to brighten the shady to partially shaded areas of your garden with its bright yellow foliage. The evergreen leathery leaves are glossy and elongated ovals, emerging a bright chartreuse and maturing to a mild chartreuse or yellow-green. As the weather cools in the fall, the leaf color brightens to screaming yellow. During the same time, the upper stems take on a brilliant red cast, contrasting vividly with the leaves. In late spring, white flowers are borne from the branches. Each blossom has many tepals (false petals) that dangle downwards. The penny-size fruits ripen from an olive color to brown and have the scent of anise when crushed. They look like tiny pumpkins. The shrub attains an upright rounded shape with open branches, especially in very shady situations and is highly deer resistant.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With an upright irregular rounded form 4 to 6 feet tall and wide, the Florida Sunshine Anise is ideal for use as an accent or specimen, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in sunny or shady landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Foliage color will be more intense when plants receive at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day. A fine addition to woodland or shade gardens, sensory gardens, yellow theme gardens and North American native plant gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3 feet apart for solid hedges; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Anise variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Florida Sunshine Anise is very easy to grow in organically rich, moist but well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. For best appearance and performance we recommend some shade or filtered sun in the mid-afternoon. Maintenance is minimal except for a snipping here or there of a stray branch. That said, plants can be clipped to control height or to maintain as a hedge.

This is an update on how these have performed in my area. Some people stated our climate was too harsh for this plant but want others to know they do well and are easy to grow. Originally purchased three of the 3 gallon Florida sunshine illicium 1 1/2 years ago but was not sure how they would perform receiving occasional temps in the teens. Late winter they looked a bit haggard but the rest of the year they look fantastic and are thriving. The picture is of one that receives morning and early afternoon sun and no afternoon sun. It was about 2 feet tall when planted and is now well over 4 feet and doing great. The other two were planted in more shade and are performing well but not as well as this one. These are magnificent plants and add nice color.——————————————–Thanks for the photo and for letting us know how well they are doing. Thanks for the kind words and awesome review! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
Ordered this plant for a spot of color in my garden and was not disappointed. It came in great shape and what a color. It is appropriately named.————————————-Thanks for the kind words and wonderful review! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
My local landscaper recommend WIlson Bros and with good reason. I love the Florida Sunshine Anise and they arrived in good shape. They were cleverly packaged to withstand the fed exp journey. I planted them around my pool deck and am excited to see how they progress.————————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! I bought this Florida Sunshine Anise for my Texas Zone 8b landscape border where it only gets a couple of hours of afternoon sun. This bed is on the Northside of my house and seems to hold more water (amended) than any other area of my yard. I have had red tip photenias there for 3 years and they all got a fungus. I pulled those and put Canyon Creek abelia and all but one didn’t survive the winter! I bought one of these as an experiment in this area. So far it looks great. As always Wilson Bros has superb packaging and ships fast. I wouldn’t buy anywhere else (I may have to call Brent about this bed) Thanks———————————————————————-Thanks for the photos! Very happy plant! A bit smaller than it expected, but it’s healthy and it’ll grow!—————————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
A bit of confusion in the description – Online catalogue described it as “a brilliant beacon in the shade garden” (which is why I bought it). A label attached to the plant says “full sun part shade.” Its in the shade now and seems to be doing well enough.———————————————————————Always go by the info we provide. It is definitely a shade plant and will do best in the shade. But up North it may take more sun. You’re in SC so it will be happy in the shade. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for your review. :)Beth|WBG
This plant was much larger than I expected and very healthy, as all the plants has been, that I have received from Wilson Brother gardens. I highly recommend this nursery.——————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
This plant was the perfect bright addition to a shady area in my yard. When the plant arrived it was in beautiful shape, full and about 4’ tall…very nice plant!
I just recently started ordering plants from Wilson Bros. At first I was not sure about ordering plants through the mail but the plants I have received from them are in great shape and are meticulously packaged for their shipment. The selection and prices are better than buying locally. They will be my new “go to” nursery.———————————————Wow! Thanks for the photo! Creating a moon garden. Using plants such as the leaves of the Florida Sunshine Anise to capture rays. Heat/humidity tends to tank flowers but leaves keep on giving. It is an area of the half acre that had been allowed to grow scrub trees. The anise is transforming the area to super nice. Super pleased with the two very healthy plants. I will be bringing in a few more. They arrived timely and awesome packaging.———————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! The Florida Sunshine Anise was packaged very well and is a stunning healthy bright yellowish shrub. I have ordered over 60 plants online this past year from several different nurseries across the country. My biggest regret is not knowing about Wilson Bros until this Spring. I am very happy with my purchase and will order again from Wilson Bros.————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! I’m using this plant as a highlight on the edges of my wooded area . I have about 7 of these and many others of the darker variety. Nice contrast plant and deer don’t bother it. The shipping was great and the size perfect . Excellent selection when I need an unusual plant.—————————————————We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the great review! They are beautiful and arrived in great shape. I was going to plant them but I’ve decided to wait until after the hard freeze we’ll get here next week. Should I put in the garage those nights or is it better to get them into the ground before it hits. It’s supposed to get down to 24 one night.—————————————–We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! All of our plants are grown outdoors and dormant for the winter and as long as you are in USDA Zone 8a or below, it should be fine to plant right now. Thanks for the great review! Beth | WBG 🙂
Well you had me at screaming yellow in description. Opened box to see cheery gold and green leaves. Lots of tiny precocious buds on branches. Looking forward to all it’s future springs. You delivered me two beautiful, healthy sunshine anise plants. They arrived promptly, well-packaged, to my doorstep. Kudos to you. I want to put them in maximum sunlight on the northern exposure of our home to complement sego palms and camelias. I hope I can plant them properly, and I found your page of instructions for that very helpful.————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! I have several of these shrubs scattered along a woodland border around my house . (Zone 7) They’ve been planted sporadically over the years. The unusually bright foliage lend a sparkle to the backdrop of our wooded landscape. . Bonus: our local deer herd Ignore! The zone 7 winters seem to stress the shrubs somewhat but they rebound and flourish gloriously throughout the rest of the year. This shrub is underrated and not easily found at local nurseries. My shrub from Wilson arrived robust, healthy and securely packaged.——————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! I misread the description on this plant. I somehow missed the part about it being a shade plant. I planted in the sun (don’t do that) and it dried up and died. Not Wilson Bros fault this one was my own mistake. Loved the plant though it was beautiful.————————————Thanks for the great review! We are so sorry that it didn’t make it in the Sun! 🙁 Beth | WBG

This was a repeat purchase from Wilson Bros Gardens and I am again amazed at the size and health of their plants! These Florida Sunshines are extremely healthy, with a strong root system, well formed branches and large, shiny, healthy leaves! They are already ‘glowing’ and I love them! They traveled cross country and were packaged very securely in a strong cardboard box, so there was no damage when they arrived. I should also mention that the soil was still moist after a 7 day trip! I am truly impressed with this nursery and I happily recommend them to everybody!—————————WBG Reply: Hi Emily, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Florida Sunshine Anise. Plants arrived in great shape. They were more than expected. The first set of plants I ordered, I killed by over watering. I purchased 4 Florida Sunshine Anise plants (3 gal size); they arrived within a few days and were healthy and a nice size (14-16 inches above ground). In the last few weeks they have added new growth and established their roots. The plants are in the morning/mid-afternoon sun and are doing well in the hot Florida summer. I appreciate that Wilson Brothers contacted me to follow up on my satisfaction. —————— WBG Reply: Hi Stephanie – Thanks so much for your review on the Florida Sunshine Anise. Yet another beautiful Anise shrub. This is my second variety and equally lovely. It’s a healthy growing shrub next to my side fence and promises to be a nice cover in front of an ugly downspout. No odor like the other Florida Anise I have but pretty light green, almost yellow leaves. No blooms or flowers yet. Too soon to tell on this one other than it’s a healthy addition to my yard. ——————- WBG Reply: Hi Marie – Thanks for your review of the Florida Sunshine Anise and we hope you enjoy it for years to come. Nice plant, deer hasn’t eaten it yet. ——— WBG RESPONSE: Hi Tony – Don’t think you’ll have to worry about deer eating your Florida Sunshine Anise. We have deer all around our gardens in north-central Georgia and they haven’t touched the Florida Sunshine or any other variety of Anise (Illicium) for that matter. They must not like the scent of the leaves. Let us know if there’s ever anything else we can help you with. We’re at your service! – Brent | Wilson Bros Gardens
I ordered two of these and when I received them, they had fallen out of their pots during shipping and were broken and cracked at the base. I contacted Wilson Bros Gardens and sent them a picture and they immediately shipped out replacement plants. I am very well pleased with the size and health of the replacement plants when they arrived and they look great in my garden. The chartreuse color is really fabulous! And I am impressed with their great customer service and responsiveness. I will definitely buy from them again.
Both plants arrived in good shape and are now growing in our yard. Love the color as it is a nice change from the regular anise with darker green leaves. We have always liked the plants we have received from Wilson Bros. Gardens and have ordered quite a few over the last couple of years.
