Description
A very unique dwarf selection of Atlantic White Cedar, ‘Heatherbun’ forms a dense “bun” of fluffy looking heather green foliage during the warm seasons that turns to intense plum purple shades during the winter. Though it really doesn’t require pruning, it responds well to an annual light shearing to maintain a more perfect rounded mound over the long term. Otherwise, with no trimming, it will take on a more natural mounded form, which we love! Unlike most other Chamaecyparis, this one will actually thrive in wet soil, provided the soil is sandy and peaty. Heatherbun is a slower grower adding up to 6 inches per year and maturing over the long term to 6 to 8 feet tall and wide. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, home foundation plantings and anywhere the sun shines for at least 6 hours per day.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing slowly to 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide at maturity, the Heatherbun Atlantic White Cedar is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in sunny areas and is a fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, Asian themed gardens, formal gardens and purple theme gardens
Growing Preferences
Heatherbun White Atlantic Cedar is easy to grow most any moist to wet but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to light shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. It prefers a moist, fertile, peaty-sandy soil. and will appreciate some shelter from strong winds. Maintenance is minimal. No pruning required except to snip a rare, stray branch tip that is spoiling the shape of the plant. That said, the plant responds well to light shearing.
