Description
Introduced from Kyushu Island to Europe by Collingwood Ingram, the ‘Kyushu’ Panicle Hydrangea still hard to find in the U.S.. It doesn’t form the dense snow-cone shaped flower clusters as many others do these days, but the large, airy panicles of beautiful, lacy white flowers provide an ethereal look and feel in the landscape. Bloom begins in July continuing through early fall and the flowers are excellent for cutting and use in fresh or dried flower arrangements. Its stems are clothed in extremely glossy green leaves that are more slender than other Paniculata varieties. At 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide it is great for use as a specimen in small to medium size garden beds, as an accent in home foundation plants. or as a natural hedge. A real beauty and one that any hydrangea lover should consider adding to their collection.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in an upright rounded form 6 to 8 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Kyushu Hydrangea is ideal for use as a specimen in small to medium sized garden spaces or in groupings or as a natural hedge in larger spaces. Also a very nice accent in home foundation plantings or as a background plant in perennial gardens. A fine addition to Hydrangea gardens, cottage gardens, white theme gardens, Asian or Zen gardens and perennial gardens.
Spacing: 5-6′ for solid hedges; 12’+ for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Kyushu Hydrangea is exceptionally easy to grow when planted right and in the right spot. Almost any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility will do. In Zones 4a to 7a it can be grown in full sun but might appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours in Zone 8. We recommend at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day for best flowering. Too much shade and plants become floppy with diminished flowering.
Note: Kyushu is a Hydrangea paniculata species that produces its flowers from buds that are formed on “new wood” (the current season’s growth). This means you don’t want to prune them in late spring or summer when they’re preparing to bloom.
