Description
Extremely rare, the ‘Maureen’ Columnar Yew is a distinct and refined columnar evergreen shrub destined to be an outstanding exclamation point on any landscape. Maureen features very attractive, soft-textured foliage with slender, dusty blue-green new leaves that age to a darker shade. Adding maybe 6 inches inches in height per year, all grown up she might reach around 8 feet in height with a small footprint of maybe 12 to 15 inches. One of the most shade tolerant of all evergreens.
Taxus x media is a hybrid designation for a number of crosses of English yew (Taxus baccata) and Japanese yew (Taxus cuspidata). These hybrids are noted for combining the ornamental excellence of English yew with the winter hardiness of Japanese yew. Maureen was found and introduced by Joe Reis and named for his wife, Maureen.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing slowly from 4 to 8 feet tall and around 12 inches wide (depending on pruning), the Maureen Columnar Yew is ideal for use as an accent in shady to partially shaded locations. Avoid direct midday sun. Also a nice centerpiece in pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to Asian theme gardens and formal gardens.
Growing Preferences
Maureen Yew is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and shade to part shade. Morning and evening sun are okay but shade or filtered sun in the mid afternoon hours is appreciated. Taxus yews do not like a poorly drained constantly soggy or wet soil. Responds very well to trimming but rarely needs it. It is best trimmed in early spring before new growth begins to emerge.
