Description
A magnificent and fast-growing flowering shrub and easy-to-grow North American native plant, over long period from late spring during summer the Oakleaf Hydrangea produces an abundance of cone-shape flower clusters up to 14 inches in length. The flowers open white and fade to a pinkish-brown in fall. But what distinguishes this hydrangea from other species is its very large, oak leaf-shaped leaves that provide a tropical look in the garden. In fall, the deep green leaves turn handsome shades of purple, orange-bronze and red. Shedding bark provides winter interest in the garden as well. A very low-maintenance plant that deserves a spot in every American garden where it will grow. USDA Zones 5a to 9b
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a mound 6 to 9 feet tall and 6 to 9 feet wide, the Oakleaf Hydrangea is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a warm season privacy hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. A nice accent or corner plant in home foundation plantings or against a large, windowless wall. Right at home in the partially shaded woodland border and a fine addition to Hydrangea gardens, white theme gardens, cottage gardens and cut flower gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 6 feet apart for hedge; 12 feet or more apart space between plants

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Cold Hardiness Zone 5a, where the Oakleaf Hydrangea is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know that it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and place back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
The Oakleaf Hydrangea is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil with average fertility, preferring a soil rich in organic matter. Sun exposure will depend on your location. Plants will grow in full sun to part shade in northern zones 5 and 6, and shade to part shade (morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun) in zones 7 and further south. For best flowering, we suggest 6 hours of direct sun light per day. As with so many other ornamental plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic. Highly resistant to pests and diseases.
Note: Oakleaf is a Hydrangea quercifolia (oakleaf) species that produces its flowers from buds that formed on “old wood” (during the previous year). Oakleaf hydrangeas typically require little to no pruning. They are best left alone. That said they can be pruned to remove a stray branch or to reduce size.

This oak leaf hydrangea left GA to be delivered in Portland OR as a birthday gift The transit time was 1 week with mail being slower right now. I was concerned about a water source and called Wilson Bro’s. They assured me and said if not in perfect condition on arrival they would replace. The plant arrived perfect. Our granddaughter had her first birthday and we could not travel from TN to OR during this pandemic. So this Oakleaf Hydrangea will be her first plant and hopefully spark a lifelong pursuit of the wonders of gardens!—————————We are so gld you and she you are pleased and we hope she enjoys it for years to come! I have this hydrangea, the snowcicle and two lemon lime abelias that are new this year. Every plant is gorgeous. I had my landscape team owner over to see them once in. He is quite impressed with the plants. Both hydrangeas are blooming. The abelias have new growth. All came so well packed and were healthy. My yard is stunning. Yes, I will recommend and use Wilson Brothers all the time. Thank you so much.——————————We are so glad you are pleased! Beth | WBG

Very pleased with this plant. It arrived in a timely manner and in excellent condition. It’s been about two weeks since it was planted and it’s doing well. There weren’t any local nurseries that had this native variety available so I ordered from Wilson Bros. Called to make sure it wasn’t too late to plant it in my area and they were very helpful. Wouldn’t hesitate to order from them again.—————————————Hi Loleta, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Oakleaf Hydrangea. I’ve purchased from Wilson Bros at least 6 times now, mostly Camellias. Everything comes very well packaged. Everything is healthy. Everything has lived. All the camellias bloomed this February. This Oakleaf Hydrangea bloomed within a week after I planted it and is growing like a weed. Amazing. I have it under some smaller oaks and it gets afternoon sun.————————-WBG Reply: Hi Barry, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Oakleaf Hydrangea.
