Description
A sport of Nandina domestica ‘Gulf Stream’ but, unlike its parent, which only turns red during winter, the Obsession Nandina has bright red colored new leaves during spring and summer. Mature foliage is deep green in color. The cultivar name ‘SEIKA’ means “sacred fire” in Japanese and was given as the name because of the color of the new growth. Like ‘Gulf Stream’, Obsession is a compact Nandina remaining small at 3 to 4 feet tall with an equal spread, and is characterized by its dense upright growth habit. Obsession keeps to itself and does not spread by seed.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, its mounding form and beautiful foliage make Obsession Nandina an excellent choice for stunning groupings or mass plantings in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Also ideal for use to line walkways and paths. Makes a fine centerpiece or accent in container gardens and is a fine addition to rock and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 2.5 feet apart for solid hedge or mass plantings; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants

How Many Plants Needed To Cover A Planting Area?
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Nandina is not winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Obsession Nandina is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist but well drained soils of average or better fertility and full sun to part shade. Plants are exceptionally drought tolerant when established. As with so many other shrubs, constantly wet or soggy soil can cause root rot and other plant diseases. Exceptionally low maintenance requiring little if any pruning. Its low water needs makes it highly suitable for Xeriscape gardening.

We were unable to find the size and variety of nandina we wanted locally, but Wilson Bros had it. They arrived healthy and with moist roots in carefully packed boxes with no broken branches or crushed pots. This is not my first time ordering with this company, so I knew I could count on them for healthy plants and excellent packing. I’ll return again!—————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
