Description
The Painted Buckeye is an easy-to-grow North American native shrub or small tree that produces numerous upward-facing 6-inch upright panicles of pink, yellow, white or cream colored tubular flowers that are often streaked in red. The large flower clusters resemble those of Salvia and are said to resemble a paint brush, hence the “Painted” portion of the common name. The ruby-throated hummingbirds, who love and feed from the flowers, will thank you for planting this one because the emergence of the flowers occurs at the same time as their arrival in mid-spring. Its large, green, palmate leaves are among the first of all plants to leaf out in spring and they stand out clearly and provide a tropical look in the landscape.
Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 10 to 15 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide, the Painted Buckeye can be grown as a large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form an attractive small tree. It is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings or mass plantings in sunny to partially shaded flowering shrub and woodland borders. See more sun preference details below under Growing Preferences. A fine addition to North American native plant gardens, shade gardens, partially shaded woodland gardens and red theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  8 feet apart for solid borders;  18 feet apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Being a North American Native plant, the Painted Buckeye is very easy to grow and virtually maintenance free when planted right and in the right spot. It grows well in most any consistently moist but well drained soil of average to high fertility, acid soil, and shade or part shade. Will tolerate full sun in zones 4 to 7 but prefers some shade during the afternoon in zones 8. Young plants prefer consistently moist soil though mature plants will tolerate short periods of drought.
