Description
A uniquely spectacular naturally occurring cross hybrid, the ‘Scarlet Belle’ Pitcher Plant is a fast grower showing off abundant dazzling red pitchers with white areoles, what some call “windows.” It is a compact plant that can produce up to 100 pitchers per clump…so watch out flies and other bugs! This one grows well in sun or part shade and from consistently moist to somewhat dry conditions. The exotic looking and fragrant dark burgundy red flowers are perched atop sturdy stems that rise above the foliage in spring. Excellent for growing in consistently moist garden beds or container gardens and is hardy further north than other cultivars. We say it’s hardy to 6a to 9b but some say 5a to 10b with some mulch for protection in northern zones.
Sarracenia ‘Scarlet Belle’ is a cross between Sarracenia leucophylla and the parrot-pitcher Sarracenia psittacina. It gets its beautiful color and unique shape from both parents.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 12 inches tall and forming a small clump 12 to18 inches wide, the Scarlet Belle Pitcher Plant is ideal for use in sunny top partially shaded garden beds or container gardens with a consistently moist soil. This is an outstanding accent plant for the bog garden or margins of the garden pond. Very nice as a solo in containers or to provide texture and color in combination container bog gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 18 inches apart for mass plantings or solid border edging; 30 inches or more apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Pitcher Plant variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
This Pitcher Plant is very easy to grow in most any consistently moist soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It prefers an acid soil ranging from 4.0 to 5.0 on the pH scale. Virtually maintenance free, we rarely fertilize it because it gets its nutritional needs from the soil and the bugs it eats. In areas that experience colder winters the foliage may need to be groomed or cut back before new growth emerges in spring.
