Description
Iris ensata ‘Shogun’, commonly called Japanese Iris or Japanese Water Iris, is a rhizomatous perennial with upright, sword-shape leaves that grow in clumps from which rise tall stout stalks holding exotic reddish-purple blooms which have a distinctively flattened appearance. Japanese Iris are right at home on the waters edge however can be grown in garden beds provided the soil is organically rich and consistently moist.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Japanese Water Iris are perfectly suited for growing in consistently moist to wet soil in garden beds or near the waters edge.
Suggested Spacing: 18 to 24 inches apart for mass plantings; 5 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
When planted right and in the right spot, which means a sunny one with loamy, moisture retentive, fertile soil, you can have good success growing Japanese Iris. For best performance, Iris ensata prefers a loamy, acidic soil rich in organic matter. The soil in the planting area should be turned to a depth of 10 to 12 inches and amended at with at least 25 percent organic matter, such as home made compost, composted cow manure or mushroom compost, to 75 percent native soil. The ideal PH range of your soil should be 5.5 to 7.8. After planting in garden beds, provide enough water to maintain a consistently moist soil. In the absence of adequate rainfall, a very deep watering once or twice a week is better that splashing just a little water every day. If planted in saturated soils near natural ponds or streams watering won’t be an issue, but just make sure to plant with the crown above the water line.
