Description

One of if not the most heavy flower Camellias in our gardens, ‘Spring Awakening’ is a hybrid that produces her fragrant rose-pink flowers in such profusion that they nearly cover the foliage beginning in late winter to mid spring. The beautiful, semi-double, rose form flowers are smaller in size, similar to Camellia sasanqua varieties, but what they lack in size they make up for in number! Lustrous deep green evergreen foliage serves as an excellent backdrop for the flowers. A vigorous grower, Spring Awakening reaches a mature height of 6 to 10 feet and 6 to 8 feet wide, depending on pruning.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide depending on pruning, the Spring Awakening Camellia can be grown as a shrub or small tree. As a shrub, it is ideal for use as a hedge or background plant, in groupings, and is especially nice as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall.) As she grow taller, lower branches can be removed to form a small tree that serves well as an attractive and colorful focal point specimen in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to Camellia gardens, pink theme gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and woodland borders. Also suitable for containers.

Suggested Spacing: 4 to 5 feet apart for solid hedge; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.
