Description
A rare and hard to find new introduction, and our top seller among all the native azaleas we grow, meet Tallulah Sunrise…she’s sure to be a big hit with gardeners that love Native Azaleas. In spring, abundant clusters of red buds open to bright peachy orange flowers highlighted with gold tones – unlike any other we’ve seen! The flowers produce a delightful honeysuckle-like fragrance that fills the garden with sweet aroma. Very lustrous dark green leaves turn orange-bronze in fall. The handsome leaves are exceptionally mildew free.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 feet in height and 5 to 6 feet wide, the Tallulah Sunrise Native Azalea is ideal for use as a specimen or grouping in woodland gardens and borders and shady flowering shrub borders. As she grows taller lower branches can be removed to form an attractive small focal point specimen tree in garden beds or pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to Azalea and Rhododendron gardens, orange or golden theme gardens, fragrance gardens, shade and woodland gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: We do not suggested using this beauty as a hedge. Plant 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this native azalea variety is not winter hardy, you can enjoy it in containers that can be moved indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Tallulah Sunrise Native Azalea is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained humus rich soil and dappled shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. Native azaleas are very low-maintenance plants that require little if any pruning. When established, plant are quite drought tolerant, requiring supplemental water only during prolonged periods of dry summer weather.

Dear Brent & Brooks Wilson, The two Tallula Sunrise Azaleas I received are healthy, well cared for and packaged by you.
I really appreciate it, thank you. Both azaleas remain successful and teem with energy.
Yet to be an avid gardener planting these two trees correctly gave a couple of concerns.
With healthy shrubs for decades growing in immediate space same soil I considered how much new material is necessary/unnecessary.
I used 2 uncracked brown eggs per azalea tree, planted approx. 6″ in. down in the soil below the roots and 6″ in. away from the side of roots.
One egg on each side of the root ball. In time the eggs decompose and bring rich nutrients into the body of the tree as it’s feeler roots grab hold of it in a year+.
At the base of the hole dug below egg area is newly added lining of dark soil.
I sprinkled epsom salt to that layer before backfilling several inches of soil back onto that bottom layer.
After the trees were fully planted I spinkled a small amount of epsom salt 5″ to 6″ inches away from the stem of the plant.
Can research epsom salts for plants without me explaining it.
Each gardener may use their own alchemy in tune and with standard principles of fertilizer, minerals, what-have-you.
I water twice per week for these first months. The first day I watered from the top soil down using garden hose.
It was inefficient for me. I chose another method of slow dispensing water spikes that screw onto 2 liter soda type bottles.
1 bottle per plant, once filled with water placed upside down and inserted at a 45 degree side angle alongside approx. 8″ in. away from the center stem.
The spike drips water toward the root ball to completely feed entire root area is the idea more directly.
These babies are doing great as we speak.
You may need to determine how to aerate surrounding soil for Azalea’s thin roots to have plenty of oxygen without getting clogged.
My situation seems to have fast drainage. I choose not to mix my soil with separaters for aeration.
People may suggest Perlite and vermiculite for examples to mix in soil to improve oxygen and water drainage.
Tip: Top Soil versus Garden Soil websearch results.
Bags of soil labeled “garden soil” may be of higher quality.
Be sure to check the Wilson’s advice page “how to check soil drainage”. Wilson Bros Gardens is legit.
Best success to you. Kind Regards, AA———————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the great review! And great information! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
