Description
A chance seedling that came from ‘Tama-no-Ura’, the ‘Tama Vino’ Camellia sports semi-double, rose-like flowers with deep wine-red centers washing to a broad white border. That said, some flowers may be more or less double and appear more solid color with a very thin or little border at all. These color variations and patterns can appear at the same time on the same plant! The glossy, very dark green leaves on this variety really make the flowers pop in the garden or in indoor cut flower arrangements.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and wide, the Tama Vino Camellia can be grown as a shrub or small tree. As a shrub it is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a hedge or background plant, in landscape borders and is especially nice as a corner plant or espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. As the plant grows, lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive and colorful weeping focal specimen in landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to red color theme gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens, Asian gardens and woodland borders. Also suitable for containers that can be brought indoors during winter north of USDA Zone 7a, where this cultivar is not reliably winter hardy. Find Your Zone
Suggested Spacing:Â 5 feet apart for solid hedge; 14 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note:Â Â For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Camellia variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.

My Camillas arrived packaged very well, intact and healthy. One was even Blooming. I ordered the smaller ones, so they will take a while to grow but I look forward to watching them grow.
I babied for babies them inside for about three weeks under fluorescent love gating in a larger closet and then planted them just recently trying to avoid any frost issues. Frost will affect baby Camillas a whole lot. I Love them and am impressed.
