Description
Phyllostachys aurea ‘Holochrysa’, commonly called True Gold Fish Pole Bamboo, is a superb medium size bamboo admired for its strikingly colorful canes. Unlike the species, which is more green and will only produce yellow canes with adequate sunlight, the canes of ‘Holochrysa’ quickly turn golden in sun or shade. As with other P. aurea, the lower internodes on mature plants tend to become distorted and compact with age. Equally as vigorous but less invasive than the species, its rigid, upright habit with dense canes grow 20 to 30 feet tall making it a fine selection for privacy screening or for use in containers. Cold hardy to USDA Zone 7a (0F) and heat hardy to Zone 11, it is also drought tolerant once established. The shoots are edible and the canes are ideal for use as interior decoration and for fishing rods, walking sticks, umbrella handles and many other crafts.

This Bamboo is a running bamboo, which means it spreads. Bamboo can be controlled in a small area (a normal city yard) simply by mowing or stepping on the young shoots. New shoots of some bamboo can also be used for culinary purposes and cooked, much like asparagus. Keep in mind that running bamboo only puts up new shoots for a short time each year and, when they are “shooting,” the new plants are very fragile and easy to destroy. Root pruning or a Bamboo Root Barrier are other methods to control spread.

I wanted a bamboo tree and didn’t know where to go. Wilson Bros large variety and type helped me choose the golden bamboo that was mailed perfectly to my home in San Antonio, TX. I loved it so much I ordered a 2nd. The second one wasn’t that great; however, Wilson Bros made amends making it so easy to receive a full refund without fuss. Much appreciated Wilson Bros, I look forward to when this specimen becomes available.——————–WBG Reply: Hi Rick, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Golden Bamboo, we are very sorry there was a problem with your order, but so glad we could make amends!
