Winterstar Boxwood – 1 Gallon Pot

The Winterstar Boxwood sports smooth and clean glossy leaves that emerge light green maturing to a rich, emerald green that hold their color during winter. At 4 feet tall and wide when all grown up, it is a good fit for smaller spaces and perfect for a clipped formal hedge. Since it responds so well to pruning, folks with an artistic eye can shape it into a pyramid, globe or other topiary forms that are ideal as a specimen or for framing entryways in pots or the ground. Over the long term, it can be maintained at 36 inches tall and wide with an annual shearing or two per year. Living up to its name, Winterstar is cold tolerant to -20F, and heat tolerant as well to USDA Zone 9b. You might also be happy to know its deer and disease resistant.

Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and wide at maturity, the Winterstar Boxwood is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a clipped or natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Excellent for shearing into formal topiary shapes such as a globe, square or pyramid, which serves well as a small outdoor Christmas tree for decorating around the holidays. Also serves as a nice centerpiece in pots, planters and other containers of 18 inches or more in diameter. A fine addition to formal gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  2.5 to 3 feet apart for solid hedges;  5 feet or more apart for space between plants

The Winterstar Boxwood is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. adapts to most soil types and likes full sun or part shade. Once established, it is quite drought tolerant, requiring supplemental water only during extended periods of dry weather. As with many other plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. In our gardens, we’ve found it to have better drought, heat and pest tolerance than many other boxwood.
