Description
Arguably the best Winter Hazel of all, ‘Winterthur’ displays a profusion of showy and fragrant yellow flowers in 2-inch long racemes that dangle downwards from bare branches in late winter to early spring. Growing to about six feet tall and eight to 10 feet wide, Winterthur’s leaves are handsome and a rich green in summer that turns to an attractive clear yellow in fall. A magnificent addition to a sunny or shady woodland border that will have you always looking forward to its bloom, which heralds the arrival of spring.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide in a rounded mound, Winterthur Winterhazel is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in sun or shade. We think it looks best in woodland gardens and borders and around outdoor living spaces and sitting areas where the fragrant flowers can be enjoyed from close up. A fine addition to yellow theme gardens, fragrance gardens, cottage gardens and woodland gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 6 to 8 feet apart for solid hedge; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Winterthur Winterhazel performs well in both full sun or full shade and prefers an organically rich, acidic, consistently moist soil, but not standing water! We mulch plants before summer arrives to help conserve moisture.
Plant Long & Prosper!
